French courses Syllabus in Auckland and Wellington

The immersion French courses at the French Institute language school in Auckland and Wellington follow the directives of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR describes methods of learning, teaching and assessing languages and provide a foreign language proficiency scale. Foreign language proficiency is measured on a six level scale from A1, for beginners, up to C2, for those who master the language. The framework and its six level scale of progression is a widely accepted a standard not only in Europe but also increasingly worldwide. Below is the CEFR description of what a learner is supposed to be capable of at each level of progression

A1 - Beginners (60 à 100 heures)

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help

Peut comprendre et utiliser des expressions familières et quotidiennes ainsi que des énoncés simples qui visent à satisfaire des besoins concrets… Peut se présenter ou présenter quelqu'un et poser à une personne des questions la concernant et peut répondre au même type de questions. Peut communiquer de façon simple si l'interlocuteur parle lentement et distinctement et se montre coopératif.

A2 - Improvers (100 à 120 heures)

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Peut comprendre des phrases isolées et des expressions fréquemment utilisées en relation avec des domaines immédiats de priorité. Peut communiquer lors de tâches simples et habituelles…Peut décrire avec des moyens simples sa formation, son environnement immédiat et évoquer des sujets qui correspondent à des besoins immédiats.

B1 - Intermediate (200 à 250 heures)

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Peut comprendre les points essentiels quand un langage clair et standard est utilisé et s'il s'agit de choses familières dans le travail, les magasins, les loisirs… Peut se débrouiller dans la plupart des situations rencontrées en voyage… Peut introduire un discours simple et cohérent sur des sujets familiers et dans ses domaines d'intérêt. Peut raconter un événement, une expérience ou un rêve, décrire un espoir ou un but et exposer brièvement des raisons ou explications pour un projet ou une idée.

B2 - Post Intermediate (200 à 250 heures)

Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Peut communiquer avec un degré de spontanéité et d'aisance tel qu'une conversation avec un locuteur natif ne comportant de tension ni pour l'un ni pour l'autre. C1 - Advanced (200 à 250 heures)

Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Peut comprendre un long discours, des émissions de télévision ou un film. Peut produire un discours clair, bien construit et sans hésitation, communiquer avec aisance, spontanéité et presque sans effort. Peut comprendre des textes longs et complexes et en apprécier les différences de style, comprendre des articles spécialisés et de longues instructions techniques. Peut s'exprimer dans un texte clair et bien structuré en développant son point de vue et écrire sur des sujets complexes dans une lettre, un essai ou un rapport, en soulignant les points importants et dans un style adapté au destinataire.
